Nasturtium is a very easy-care crop, but is extremely susceptible to aphids. But fear not, lice can be controlled in a variety of ways. The nasturtium literally attracts aphids
Do you love nasturtiums? They are not alone there, because aphids also love to settle on the plant. In itself, the aphids do not harm the nasturtium, but whoever uses them for consumption should act quickly.
There are various ways to control the aphids on the nasturtium. If used correctly, chances are good that you can continue to enrich your salad with the spicy leaves of nasturtium without worry.
4 measures for aphids on the nasturtium
❶ Water jet against aphids
A moderate infestation by aphids can often be combated surprisingly easily, namely with a water jet. The jet should be hard enough to wash the pests off the underside of the leaves, but not so hard that the nasturtium itself is damaged. Try this purely mechanical way of fighting first. If successful, you will be rid of the aphids immediately.
❷ Nettle brew against aphids
In the early stages of aphid infestation, nettle decoction has also proven itself as a control agent. You can easily make such a brew yourself. Simply put fresh, finely chopped nettles in a bucket, fill up with water and let the plant parts rest for a day. Now fill a spray bottle with the broth and spray the nasturtium with it daily and extensively.
"Warning: Stinging nettle smells strong. Use this aphid control method only for nasturtiums in the garden and not for specimens on the balcony. Before you eat the nasturtium, you should wait a few days until the unpleasant smell has evaporated.
❸ Alcohol-soap mixture against aphids
An alcohol-soap mixture offers a little less nuisance to your nose and a greater effectiveness against aphids. It consists of a liter of water, 100 milliliters of alcohol and a tablespoon of soft soap. If you don't eat your nasturtium, you can use alcohol instead of alcohol.
If you want to enjoy the leaves later, choose a high-proof, clear schnapps as an alternative to alcohol. You also spray the alcohol-soap mixture onto the nasturtium once a day with the spray bottle. The chances of success are better if you carry out the treatment in the evening after sunset.
❹ beneficials against aphids
The use of beneficials is very effective in the fight against annoying aphids. However, this only applies in closed rooms, for example in the greenhouse. Unfortunately, outdoors, you have no guarantee that the animals will actually eat the aphids on the nasturtium.
If you decide to use beneficial insects, seven-point ladybirds (Coccinella septempunctata) and common lacewings (Chrysoperla carnea) are particularly greedy and therefore suitable helpers. You can get ladybugs and lacewings for small money in gardening stores.
